Finding your flow

How breath, rhythm and a little patience turn a sequence of poses into a moving meditation.

Start with the breath

Flow begins long before the first sun salutation. Before you move, take five slow breaths through the nose, letting each exhale run a little longer than the inhale. This is the rhythm the rest of your practice will follow.

In vinyasa, every movement is paired with a breath: inhale to lengthen, exhale to fold or twist. When you lose the breath, slow the movement down until the two meet again. Speed isn't the goal. Continuity is.

Practising near water, or anywhere with a horizon, can help. Let your gaze rest softly and let the sound of your breath become the loudest thing in the room.

If your mind wanders, that's fine. Notice where it went, then come back to the next inhale.

Over time, the sequence starts to carry you. That moment when you stop thinking about what comes next is what we mean by flow.

Try it this week in Sophie's Morning Vinyasa, Monday and Wednesday at 6:30am.
